The European Union just approved new regulations on Artificial Intelligence. The “AI Act” has been in discussed in parliament since 2021, but was passed today.
The rules will come into effect over time. The policing policy in the quote below is in line with existing European sentiment towards “big brother”, so no real surprises there. Like GDPR, it will be interesting to see how it all gets practically implemented or will some products simply be held back from the European market.
(AI bans) include predictive policing, emotion recognition systems in workplaces or schools and social scoring systems that assess individuals based on their behaviour.
The law also bans police officers using real-time facial recognition technology, with exceptions for law enforcement if they are searching for an individual convicted or suspected of a serious crime, such as rape or terrorism.
